Overview #

All food and drink served/sold at Rehoboth Christian College, whether it be in the College canteen, school excursions, fundraising events organised by teachers/students or parent groups or treats supplied by individual teachers, are to comply with the healthy food and drink policy as stated: the “Traffic Light” system.

Rational and Scope #

The Rehoboth Christian College policy is a whole College approach which provides a consistent message to all the school community through the curriculum, social and physical environments. It applies to all staff and students.

Guidelines #

The policy for healthy food and drink choices at Rehoboth Christian College is based on:

  1. the National Dietary Guidelines for Children & Adolescents in Australia and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating;
  2. the whole-College approach which includes canteen workers, Principals, teachers, students and parents/carers
  3. A “Traffic Light” system for rating the suitability of food and drinks:
    1. Green: 60% of the menu/food on offer. These foods/drinks should be encouraged and promoted
    2. Amber: 40% of the menu/food on offer.  These foods should be chosen with care.
    3. Red: Not to be offered without consultation, in very small amounts and limited to one off or occasional events. These foods are not part of the regular healthy food and drinks choices.

Principles #

The Role of Rehoboth Christian College #

The role of the Rehoboth Christian College canteen is to provide a food service to students and staff that meets their nutritional needs, promotes healthy food and is part of the whole school approach, is affordable and financially sustainable.

Policy Statement #

The Rehoboth Christian College policy has adopted a whole-College approach which provides a consistent message to all the College community through the curriculum, social and physical environments.

Procedures #

  1. Traffic Light system: All food and drink served/sold at Rehoboth Christian College, whether it be in the College canteen, school excursions, fundraising events organised by teachers/students or parent groups or treats supplied by individual teachers, are to comply with the healthy food and drink policy as stated – the “Traffic Light” system.
  2. State Policy: Rehoboth Christian College is an independent College and does not have to comply with State policy. It is our aim to comply with the State policy as far as possible and to encourage all those providing food for sale to be encouraged to follow the healthy food and drinks choice policy at Rehoboth Christian College.
  3. Our suppliers: Rehoboth Christian College has access to many suppliers whose products meet the Star choice system of healthier food choices. It is recommended that all foods for sale at the school are purchased through these registered suppliers.
  4. Food sold/served: All food and drinks sold/served at Rehoboth Christian College are subject to the highest degree of food handling practices and care. All information on these practices can be directed to the Canteen operator for assistance and supplies.
  5. Rehoboth Christian College canteen menu: Regular review of the Rehoboth Christian College Food and Drink policy and canteen menu is to be conducted and improvements made accordingly. Canteen information is to be regularly reported in the school newsletters.
  6. Heat and serve classification: According to the local council the Rehoboth Christian College canteen, is classified “Heat and Serve”. This means that the canteen is not able to cook large quantities of food on the premises for sale. All food sellers in the school must be aware of this.

At Rehoboth Christian College, we are busy discovering God’s story for us. It is a story about how He has provided a safe, secure environment for Christian families to send their children to be educated; a place where students are taught to think Christianly about the world and their place in it. Rehoboth was also only the second school of its kind in Australia at its opening; a school where Jesus Christ was to be honoured as Lord of all.
