Overview #
This policy should be read alongside the financial risk component of the College Risk Framework. The purpose of the policy is to ensure that workers’ compensation claims are managed under that framework and according to the Workers’ Compensation and Injury Management Act 1981 (The Act).
Procedures for Making A Claim #
- In the event of a work-related accident/incident, employees must complete an Incident and Hazard Report Form and submit to the Business Office within three days of the incident.
- The employee must also complete the Workers Compensation Claim Form and submit a First Medical Certificate issued by the treating medical practitioner to the Finance Manager.
- On receipt of the Workers Compensation Claim Form and First Medical Certificate, the Finance Manager or a member of the Finance Team delegated by her will submit both documents to the Insurance Company.
- Beyond the period covered by the First Medical Certificate, additional time off work must be stipulated in a Progress Medical Certificate issued by the treating medical practitioner. These certificates should be submitted promptly to the Finance Manager, who will then forward these forms to the insurer within one week. Workers will usually only receive compensation payments for periods stipulated by medical certificates.
- The insurer is required within 14 days to notify the employer and worker of acceptance or denial of liability for claims.
- If liability for the claim is accepted, the insurer will provide advice to the employee and finance manager that payments will follow. Staff are advised that it is not uncommon to experience delays of up to 8 weeks in the settlement of claims.
- It is the responsibility of the employee to inform their manager of any periods of absence or injury. Personal illness leave forms reflecting the number of days absent are to be completed and submitted in the normal way. These should be endorsed “Workers’ Compensation claim pending”. Where compensation settlement includes an element of wages reimbursement, the equivalent number of days may be credited to the injured member’s leave account.
