The amount of homework set, and the amount of time required to complete assignments should be in proportion to the total amount of time recommended for that school year for homework, study, and reading each evening and the number of other subjects a student takes. The table below indicates the amount of homework a student should complete each night. It assumes a block of homework a week (e.g. 45 mins in Year 7) per core subject (HASS, English, Maths, Science), with Electives/Other forming a fifth learning area.
Year 7 | 45 mins of homework per night, five days per week |
Year 8 | 1-1.5 hours of homework per night, five days per week |
Year 9 | 1-1.5 hours of homework per night, five days per week |
Year 10 | 1.5-2 hours of homework per night, five days per week |
Year 11-12 | 2-3 hours of homework per night, five days per week |
Study will require no formal home-based assignment or hand-in work to be due any later than the Friday prior to the first examination of the exam block in question. The one exception to this may be for year 12 students in courses where small group moderation is necessary, and the timing is determined by another school.
Teachers should not expect students to use holidays for the completion of formal work set as part of their courses. Staff should also not set any formal home-based assignment / hand-in work prior to a holiday which is due to be handed in during the first week of the following school term.
